On Canvas
“Should Feel Like Saturday”
16 x 12 x 0.5 in, Mixed Media on Canvas
Framed 17 x 14 x 0.75 in
“Should Feel Like Saturday” juxtaposes decorative papers with every day items that provide a snapshot of global cultural norms. The printed words of ten different languages can be found within the tiles and the overall composition explores how we piece together our experiences and memories to create the rhythms of our lives. The herringbone pattern is reminiscent of quilt and tile work, which are often personalized and handcrafted elements within a home. The work was created one row at a time, with an eye for how each tile might flow into or contrast with its neighbor to create continuity and movement. The array of blues is eye-catching from a distance, while beckoning the viewer in for a closer look.
“Snippets of Time”
16 x 12 x 0.5 in, Mixed Media on Canvas
Framed 17.5 x 13.25 x 2 in
Charmed by the spontaneous beauty of scraps accumulating on my work table, I initiated this piece in a spirit of playfulness. I committed to saving my snips and using them on a larger scale and layered the canvas for the sheer fun of it, without any type of formal structure. It was a liberating way to create and a notable departure from the usual degree of precision in my work. I found I would add to the canvas as a way to unwind or when I needed a quick creative outlet. Each new addition served as a mini-record of another project’s progress and aligned with my minimal waste philosophy. This is all about celebrating the unexpected moments of joy peppered throughout our day.
“Snippets of Conversation”
16 x 12 x 0.5 in, Mixed Media on Canvas
Framed 17.5 x 13.25 x 2 in
“Snippets of Conversation” is the second canvas in the “Snippets” series, inspired by the spontaneous beauty of scraps that accumulate on my work table. The colorful bits inspired me to collect rather than discard them, and ultimately dedicate them to a project. I found layering them freely was a rewarding creative outlet and a great way to gain perspective, as each new addition to the canvas marked another project’s progress. As a series, it becomes an ever-expanding body of work, made possible by the remnants of complementary works. It is all about celebrating sustainability and the small wins in our daily life.
“You Are Here”
36 x 24 x 0.75 in, Mixed Media on Canvas (SOLD)
Framed 37.5 x 25.5 x 0.75
More than any other nation, the origins of our American population come from everywhere on the planet. Our diversity is the thread that weaves us together in a distinctive cultural fabric. This work pieces together an international collection of antique and vintage maps spanning the globe across multiple timelines. Postcards, tickets and travel-related documents are also interspersed within the patchwork composition to spotlight individual moments and memories within our collective journey. American stamps are overlaid on top of the patches, reminiscent of how a passport book or steam trunk may get stamped to mark origins and destinations. Exclusively American stamps were selected to highlight our national identity independent of our international origins. Embroidered on to the canvas is a single star from a retired U.S. flag to honor the aspirations of what unifies us.
